General Election 2024

A UK Parliamentary General Election has been called and will take place on Thursday 4 July 2024.

This page contains important information about the deadlines in the run up to polling day.

Register to vote

The deadline for registering to vote at the General Election on Thursday 4 July is 11.59pm on Tuesday 18 June 2024.

If you register after the deadline you will not be eligible to vote on Thursday 4 July 2024.

If you have already registered and want to know when you will be added to the register, the deadlines for registration in 2024 are:

What to do if you have recently moved

If you have recently moved and need to register at a new address, or update the address you are currently registered at, you will need to complete a new registration.

Before you start

To register, you will need to provide your:

  • National Insurance number (but you can still register if you do not have one)
  • Date of birth

Voting by post

The deadline to apply for a postal vote or postal proxy vote, and to make changes to an existing postal or postal proxy vote, is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

If you are registered to vote by post and would like to cancel this arrangement, please email your request to vote@ashford.gov.uk (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). The deadline for cancelling a postal vote arrangement is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024.

Voting by proxy

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote, and to make changes to an existing proxy vote, is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

If you are registered for a proxy vote and would like to cancel this arrangement, please email your request to vote@ashford.gov.uk (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm). The deadline for cancelling a proxy vote arrangement is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024.

Voter ID

Anyone voting in a polling station must present a valid form of photographic identification (photo ID). This requirement was introduced by the government through the Elections Act 2022 and applies to all voters who vote in person or by proxy.

Photo ID is not required for postal voting.

You can view the full list of accepted photo ID on the Electoral Commission website.

Voter Authority Certificate

If you do not have any of the accepted photo ID, and you want to vote at the polling station, you will need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. This is a photographic identification document specific for the purposes of voting.

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

It’s free to apply. You’ll need:

  • a recent, digital photo of yourself
  • your National Insurance number
    You can still apply if you do not have a National Insurance number. You’ll need to provide other documents to prove your identity, for example a birth certificate, bank statement and utility bill.

You can also apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate by post or in person. 

Poll card and postal vote dispatch dates

Information about the dates we will be sending out poll cards and postal vote packs will be listed on this page once they have been confirmed with our printers.

Your polling station

Following the recent changes to borough wards and polling districts, there may be a change to the polling station for your area. Details of your polling station will be shown on the poll card you receive prior to polling day.

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday 4 July 2024

If you are registered but your name is not appearing on a credit check please contact the credit reference agency - if you are registered the credit agencies will have this information. The register is published once a month and any updates are provided to credit companies on publication.

If you have received a postal vote or poll card or other document for someone that does not live at your address - write on the envelope/card that this person is not at this address and return it to us. We will then take steps to remove this person from the register

If there are alterations needed to your name (such as a change through marriage or deed poll) – you will need to provide evidence such as a copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll and complete a change of name form. Please email vote@ashford.gov.uk confirming your name and address and a change of name form will be sent to you.
