Chilmington Green
Introducing Chilmington
Chilmington is a new community of up to 5,750 quality homes, a district centre and community infrastructure. This will create over 1,000 jobs in the next 20 years, coming forward in four main phases with several hundred homes delivered per year.
The development will provide around £125m towards local amenities including:
- A secondary school (planning permission received)
- Four primary schools (first one is now open)
- Shops
- Healthcare
- Sports and leisure facilities
- Significant areas of public open space
These will be created as the phases of development come forward.
Outline planning permission for the development was granted early in 2017 with works on site well underway and many residents have now moved into their new homes. Chilmington Green Primary School welcomes pupils to their new building on the site, and plans for a secondary school have received planning approval.

A shared vision for Chilmington
From the inception of the Chilmington project the ambition has been to create a place of special character with a strong community feel – a place where families and people of all ages will want to live, enjoy and call home.
The partners behind the project, including Ashford Borough Council, Kent County Council, Homes England and the developers, have a shared vision for Chilmington.
Building a community at Chilmington Green
Chilmington Green will be a place where high quality is apparent both in the build of the new homes and surrounding facilities, but also in the opportunities for local people to play an active role in creating and sustaining their community. In order to support the creation of this new community, a community development strategy has been created by Ashford Borough Council and its community partners.
A Community Management Organisation (CMO) has been set up which will be gifted community facilities such as play spaces, community centres, open space and much more. It will manage these facilities on behalf of Chilmington residents and play a key role in driving forward community action.
Creative Chilmington
Creative Chilmington is a strategy that sets out a clear vision and highlights many unique opportunities to embed arts, culture and creativity throughout the development. It sets out the many ways to achieve this including through artist commissions, creative community activity, flexible use of community facilities and provision of creative workspace. It also highlights the potential for the arts to improve lives, whether through creative projects, or creative health or education initiatives, and the benefits this brings.
