Project enriches the lives of Askes Court residents
Published: 12/11/2024Residents of an independent living scheme in Ashford are enjoying a new sensory garden, seating area and mini wildflower meadow after enlisting the support of their local borough councillor and parish council.
Resident Dave Marsh explained that people living in Askes Court in Hoxton Close, Singleton thought a new focal point was needed within the scheme to help bring them all together and enjoy.
Ideas were discussed and it was agreed to clear an area of “scruffy bushes and brambles” and replace with a turfed area complete with benches, large plant pots and a water feature. Another communal area nearby was to be turned into a small wildflower meadow.
At this point Bill Barrett, the Singleton ward member on Ashford Borough Council, got involved and pledged nearly £700 of his ward member’s annual grant towards the cost of turning the dream into reality for the residents. Great Chart with Singleton Parish Council also contributed £139 to the scheme.
A few months later, the work is completed and the sensory garden was officially opened by Cllr Barrett, in the presence of Janet Sullivan, Co-Vice Chair of the parish council, and watched by a group of residents.
Dave Marsh said: “Now that the scheme is complete there is a lot of interest from the residents and many people are already using it. The outdoor space will really come into its own next spring and summer and I hope we all have great enjoyment out of it for many years to come.”
Cllr Barrett said: “I had no hesitation in supporting this project. It will enrich the wellbeing of those living at Askes Court and is a very green, environmentally friendly addition to the already excellent facilities here.”
Janet Sullivan said: “We are always looking to support local projects and we thought this was a wonderful idea.”
