Reminders and Final Notices

Council Tax payment reminders are sent to any liable person named on the bill.

Please note that we do not have to send you a reminder each time you miss an instalment. The law only requires us to send a maximum of two reminders per financial year.

First reminder

If you receive a reminder, you will be given a date to pay your overdue amount by. If you pay the overdue amount by this deadline then you can continue to pay by monthly instalments.

If the overdue amount isn't paid by the date specified, the next stage is to issue a summons to court.

Second reminder

If the account is defaulted upon again then a second reminder is sent.

If you receive a second reminder, you will be given a date to pay your overdue amount by. If you pay the overdue amount by this deadline then you can continue to pay by monthly instalments.

If the overdue amount is not paid by the date specified, the next stage is to issue a summons to court.

Final notice

If the account is defaulted upon again then a final notice is issued.

You will lose the right to pay by instalments if you receive a final notice. If this happens, you will need to pay the balance for the financial year in full.

If the full amount is not paid within seven days, the liable person will be sent a summons. If this happens you will have to pay costs as well as your council tax.

However, we may be able to suspend the final notice and reinstate your instalments if you contact the council to arrange to bring your account up to date and set up a direct debit instruction for future instalments.
