Ashford Remembers WWII
2020 marked the 75th anniversary of both VE Day and VJ Day. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ashford held a number of online and socially distanced activities to honour the anniversaries.
What is VE Day and VJ Day?
Victory in Europe (VE) Day, 8 May 1945, celebrates the German surrender during the Second World War. Millions of people rejoiced in the news that Nazi Germany had surrendered. However, it was not the end of the conflict as war against Japan was ongoing in the Far East.
Victory over Japan (VJ) Day is the day in which Imperial Japan surrendered effectively ending the Second World War on 15 August 1945. The impact of war was felt long after both Germany and Japan surrendered.
