Energy Funding and Grants

There's lots of financial help available right now due to the cost of living crisis, as well as ongoing support for those on benefits. The government has pledged to help residents with their energy bills this winter, but details of any financial help is yet to be released. Once we have this information we will share it.

However, there are still many home help schemes and grants available for improving energy efficiency in your home.

These include:

  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
  • Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 (HUG2)
  • Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
  • Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)

This funding is not delivered directly by the government, but through installers, local authorities, energy companies and other bodies.

Support through installers

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides grants to property owners to install low carbon heating systems such as heat pumps.

If you live in England and want to replace your existing gas, oil or electric boiler with a heat pump or biomass boiler, you could get £7,500 towards the cost of doing so.

You can find out more information and apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on the government website.

Support through your local authority

The Home Energy Upgrade Grant (HUG2) provides energy efficiency measures and low carbon heating to low income households. If you're off the main gas grid, on low income and have an energy performance certificate rating from D to G, you might be eligible for a home upgrade grant. This could include energy efficiency measures such as wall, loft  and underfloor insulation, installation of heat pumps, solar panels, double glazing, low energy lighting and electric storage heaters.

It is only available to certain postcodes in England. You can use our postcode check to find out if you are eligible, find more information and how to apply on our HUG2 webpage.

Support through your energy company

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a requirement for energy suppliers to help households reduce the costs of their home heating by fitting energy-saving measures.

You might be able to get help for energy saving improvements to your home if you either:

  • Claim certain benefits and live in private housing (for example you own your home or rent from a private landlord)
  • Live in social housing

You may get help with the cost of:

  • Insulation work, for example to your loft or cavity walls
  • Replacing or repairing your boiler - or other upgrades to your heating

Different energy suppliers have different amounts of support and offer different types of improvements - so you will need to check with your energy company if you're eligible.

More information about the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) can be found on the government website.

The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is a government scheme to help people insulate their homes, make them more energy efficient and save money on their energy bills.

You can find more information about the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) and to check if you are eligible on the government website.
