5 Do I need permission for solar panels or EV charging points?
Solar panels
The installation of solar panels and equipment on residential buildings and land may be 'permitted development' with no need to apply to the Local Planning Authority for planning permission.
There are important limitations and conditions depending on the location, type of property and the size and situation of the equipment.
Building regulations are also likely to apply
Further, detailed information on Planning and Building control can be found on the Planning Portal.
If you are unsure, you can apply to the council for a Certificate of Lawfulness (Proposed Development) to confirm whether planning permission is required. If permission is necessary, you will need to submit a separate application. See FAQ 1
EV Charging points
A domestic electric vehicle (EV) charger enable the users to charge their electric car from home, allowing for easy and convenient charging. These chargers may be attached to a house or installed on an upstand. The installation can be carried out under permitted development rights, provided specific limits and conditions are met.
Please note: If you use on-street parking you should not trail a cable across the pavement. If you do, then you may be liable for any issues or injuries which are caused. Trailing a cable across the pavement without permission is an offence as it breaches the Highways Act 1980 Section 162 and Section 178.
If you need to trail a cable across a pavement, you may be able to apply to the relevant Highways Authority for permission, which may come with attached conditions. If this is not an option, or permission is not granted, it is recommended that you seek an alternative, such as using a public charging facility.
